A resort package should make the stay easier to understand while leaving enough contribution to justify the work of delivering it. Start with the room and every included extra, then separate the costs that vary with the booking from overheads you need the package to help cover. The worked example below is hypothetical and uses no PowerOTA pricing or promised returns.
Define the package unit
Decide exactly what one purchase covers: number of nights, rooms, adults, children and included experiences. A two-night package for two adults cannot be compared directly with a one-night room rate. Record dates, capacity limits and exclusions. If an activity depends on weather or a third-party provider, resolve fulfilment and substitution arrangements before selling it.
- Write the inclusions in guest-facing language.
- State quantities per guest, room, night or stay.
- Check that each delivery team can fulfil the offer.
Build the variable-cost worksheet
List room servicing, meals, transfers, tickets and other included items using the property’s own cost inputs. Include payment or distribution costs applicable to the selling route. Distinguish a fixed amount per booking from a percentage of the selling price. Do not add a percentage fee as though it were a fixed rupee amount.
- Record quantity multiplied by unit cost for each inclusion.
- Show the source and review date of supplier inputs.
- Keep taxes and statutory accounting treatment subject to finance review.
Calculate contribution using a consistent basis
In the hypothetical example, two room nights cost ₹5,000 to service, four breakfasts cost ₹1,000, an experience costs ₹800 and an allocated fixed selling cost is ₹200. Fixed variable costs therefore total ₹7,000. At a ₹12,000 selling price with a hypothetical 2% variable selling fee, contribution is ₹12,000 minus ₹7,000 minus ₹240, or ₹4,760. Contribution margin is ₹4,760 divided by ₹12,000: about 39.7%.
- Contribution is not net profit; overheads still need to be covered.
- Use consistent tax-inclusive or tax-exclusive figures.
- For a target margin m and percentage fee f, the illustrative price formula is fixed variable costs divided by (1 minus m minus f), where the denominator is positive.
Check the offer before making it live
Review the guest description against the delivery worksheet. Confirm what staff can see in the reservation and how capacity-limited inclusions are handled. Ask the booking provider to demonstrate the package or add-on model you intend to use. A booking extra does not by itself establish restaurant POS integration, spa scheduling or an activity-capacity engine.
- Test the final total and inclusions on mobile.
- Confirm amendment and cancellation handling.
- Track delivery issues and actual costs after the first completed stays.

| Hypothetical component | Quantity | Unit cost | Extended cost | Cost basis / owner |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Room servicing | 2 | 2500 | 5000 | Per room night |
| Breakfast | 4 | 250 | 1000 | Per person meal |
| Experience | 1 | 800 | 800 | Per stay |
| Fixed selling allocation | 1 | 200 | 200 | Per booking |
| Percentage selling fee | 0.02 | 12000 | 240 | Hypothetical fee x selling price |
Hypothetical result: ₹12,000 revenue minus ₹7,240 included variable costs leaves ₹4,760 contribution. If the example targets a 35% contribution margin with a 2% percentage fee, ₹7,000 ÷ (1 − 0.35 − 0.02) is approximately ₹11,111.11 before any separate treatment required for taxes. Replace all inputs with approved property figures.
Put the guide into practice
Use the worksheet to compare the promise made to the guest with the cost and capacity needed to deliver it. Ask for a demonstration of the exact package workflow before treating it as supported software functionality.
